The Marines do have a nice uniform, I'll give them that. I think it's one of the reasons the Army is going to do away with the old Class A's (the green ones) and go to just the Dress Blues as their dress uniforms. It's a good idea, I just wish it weren't made from Polyester. The older wool Class A's are much more comfortable to wear, even in summer, because wool breathes and polyester does not. :)

Oh, and they're actually low quarters (shoes). They come pre-shined like that, you just have to use a soft rag to clean them up a little and make sure you don't scuff the finish. :)

Actually, you might find this interesting about the "Blood Stripes".

From the book, The Marines, by Edwin Howard Simmons, J. Robert Moskin, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, 1998
"...For generations drill instructors have solemnly told recruits that the scarlet stripe on the blue trousers of Marine officers and noncommissioned officers are "blood stripes" in honor of Marines killed in storming of Chapultapec in Mexico City in 1847. Interesting but not true.

The wearing of stripes on the trousers began in 1834, following the Army's practice of having trouser stripes the color of the facings. Col. Henderson prescribed buff-white stripes for officers and sergeants. When in 1839 the uniform changed back to dark blue coats faced red, officer trouser stripes became dark blue edged in red. Ten years later officer stripes changed to red and in 1859 the uniform regulations prescribed a scarlet welt inserted into the outer seam for officers, and a scarlet cord for staff noncommissioned officers and musicians.

After more variations were tried, finally, in 1904 the simple and striking all-scarlet stripe was adopted..."

uhm.... that's not what he told me about blood stripes.

he said there's something they have to go through to get them. It's kinda like a purple heart, but I don't remember exactly how they got them... but i do know blood was involved.

Well, here's what the Marine Corps says about "blood stripes":

"The Blood Stripe is a scarlet stripe that runs down each trouser leg of the dress blue uniform. Originally, it honored those Marines who had fallen in battle in the "Halls of Montezuma" during the Mexican War, in 1847. Today, the blood stripe honors the memory of all our fallen comrades."

The blood stripe is a part of the Marine Corps dress blue uniforms for NCOs and Officers (not junior enlisted). There's only one reference I've found to an old hazing ritual involving other NCOs kneeing the side of a newly promoted NCO to leave a bruise the length of the leg, as a literal blood stripe, but even if someone does not go through that, they still get to wear them once they become NCOs.
