Artist's Comments
This piece doesn't look like much at first glance - however, I used a couple of different techniques in this and had some help from my dog, Abby, as well.
The picture started out with a white sheet of smooth Bristol paper, which is a heavy paper similar to card stock. Then I added the watercolor "splotches" to it - by means of a dog paw. I would ask Abby to "sit", then put the color on her paw with a large brush, and ask her to "touch" the paper. Each color on the image is one paw print on the paper. Once dry, I penciled the German Shepherd outline on the back of the paper, then cut it out along the outline. The black parts of the dog are done with a Sharpie marker. The background is done on the computer. |

Yes, Abby was very patient. She didn't quite understand the purpose of this at first. We have a "touch" command for her to touch something with her paw ("target" for touching with her nose instead), so it wasn't difficult to get her to do it, but you could tell she didn't understand *why* she was doing it. She did really well with it, though, especially since we've never done this before.
